Barbara Spradley Oswalt, 89, of Batesburg passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Monday, June 4th, at Agape Hospice House of Lexington.
Mrs. Oswalt was born December 28, 1928, one of 11 children of the late Fletcher and Irene Spradley. She grew up on a farm and left school at 15 to marry the love of her life, the late Howard Oswalt. Together, Barbara and Howard raised five children and worked hard to provide for their family. Barbara was a loving and devoted mother and wife who spent most of her life caring for others. She enjoyed the outdoors and fishing and hunting with family and friends. The Oswalts were married for 63 years before Howard passed away in 2009. They were members of Mt. Ebal Baptist Church.
She is survived by her five children: Vicky Kennedy (Jimmy) of Kingstree, Barry (Harriet) Oswalt of Pelion, Debra Oswalt Howell of Batesburg, Ricky (Barbara) of Batesburg, and Craig (Melissa) Oswalt of Ridgeway; grandchildren Kim Crouch of Batesburg, Aimee (Michael) Crosby of Lexington, Billy Kennedy of Columbia, and Tara Ruff of Clemson; four great-grandchildren; siblings Cyril Spradley of Batesburg, Carnell Spradley of Vaucluse, and Peggy Oswald of Batesburg; special friends Monica and Joe Bradley of Saluda and their three children; and last but not least, her beloved and faithful best friend, her chocolate lab, Cooper.
Family visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 at Milton Shealy Funeral Home in Batesburg and the funeral will be held the following morning, Thursday, June 7th, at 11:00 am at Mt. Ebal Baptist Church, Batesburg, Rev. Bill Paulling presiding, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers are Billy Kennedy, Skyler Oswalt, Michael Crosby, Hubert Fox, Joe Bradley, and Rocky Oswald.
The family would like to thank the doctors who took such excellent care of their mother over the last many years: Dr. Amy Epps, Dr. Renee Ellis, and Dr. Huong Phan, as well as the staff of Lexington Medical Center 4th floor south and Agape Hospice House for their care and concern in her final days. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Ebal Baptist Church, 5 Lion Loop, Batesburg, SC or the Agape Hospice House, 128 Library Hill Lane, Lexington, SC 29072.
