Carl Kirkland Sr.

Carl B. ”Buddy” Kirkland, Sr., 88, of Batesburg passed away on Monday, December 11, 2023 at Lexington Medical Center after a brief illness. He was married to the late Shirley Quattlebaum Kirkland for 65 years until her death in June 2020. They had five children: Sharon Wash, Melanie Hall (Joseph), Carl Kirkland, Jr. (Martha), Ron Kirkland (Beth), and Brian Kirkland (Kristine) all of Batesburg. Buddy was blessed with 13 grandchildren, Amanda Hall Trotter (Trea), Mallory Hall Wilcox (Brandon), Erin Wash Mills (Jack), Brett Wash (Lisa), Brittney Kirkland Herlong (Ben), Blair Kirkland Long (Justin), Jackson Kirkland, Lindsay Kirkland, Alison Kirkland, Riley Kirkland, Evan Kirkland, and Julian Kirkland; as well as his 10 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Kirkland Burkett of Leesville. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Joseph and Grace Padgett Kirkland of Monetta; grandson, Trae Kirkland; siblings, Eldred Joseph Kirkland (Celia), Claudine Kirkland Butler (Roy); and a brother-in-law, Roy Burkett.

After graduating from Monetta High School, Buddy went to work at Savannah River Plant until his retirement. For many years, he participated in Dixie Youth Baseball, where he coached his sons, Carl and Ron and later his son, Brian. He loved baseball and football and was an avid Gamecock fan. Buddy was a member of East Side Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, he was on the finance committee and the Tape Room staff. After the passing of his wife, he stuck close to home, where he enjoyed watching reruns of Gunsmoke and the Waltons, and on Monday nights the Antiques Roadshow. Most of his outings centered around doctors’ appointments, visits to the barbershop and to the cemetery to visit his beloved wife.

The funeral services for Buddy will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, December 15th at Milton Shealy Funeral Home with entombment to follow in Christ the Good Shepherd Mausoleum in Ridge Crest Memorial Park. The Rev. Robert Culbertson will officiate. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service from 1 until 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Active pallbearers will be: Trea Trotter, Brett Wash, Jackson Kirkland, Brandon Wilcox, Ben Herlong, Justin Long, and Skyler Trotter. Honorary pallbearers will be: Riley Kirkland, Evan Kirkland, Julian Kirkland and Sawyer Wash.
