Cary Thomas Johnson

March 18, 1948 — April 9, 2025

North Augusta

Cary Thomas Johnson, 77, of North Augusta, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 9, 2025. Born in Batesburg, SC, he was the son of the late Thomas E. and Lorna Joan Fleckney Johnson. A devoted member of Still Waters Baptist Church, Cary found great joy in singing in the choir and faithfully serving as a deacon.

Cary dedicated much of his life to coaching, making a lasting impact on countless students and athletes throughout his career. He coached at several schools, including Batesburg-Leesville, Jackson, Mullins, and North Augusta. Beyond his career and church, Cary enjoyed life’s simple pleasures—gardening, fishing, golfing, and collecting a variety of treasured items over the years. His quick wit and contagious smile will be dearly remembered.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Penny Johnson; children, Mark Johnson (Carissa), Vicki Johnson, and Kari Danielle Johnson (Alan); and two grandchildren. He is also survived by his twin brother, Gary Johnson and sister, Marilyn Miller (Don). In addition to his parents, Cary was preceded in death by his infant brother, Robert Johnson.

A memorial service celebrating Cary’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 12th at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service. Rev. Barry Epps and Rev. Robert Culbertson will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Still Waters Baptist Church Mission Fund, 374 Delmar Road, Leesville, SC 29070.
