Emily M. McCarty, 86, of Batesburg died Friday, November 2, 2018. Born in the Hollywood section of Saluda County on January 12, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Charles L. and Leona P. Matthews. She was a graduate of Hollywood High School where she excelled in basketball. She earned a degree from Winthrop College and was a teacher in the Batesburg-Leesville School system for 32 years where she primarily taught 7th grade science. After retiring she continued this commitment to education through volunteering on a regular basis at the B-L Middle School library. She also was an active member at the First Baptist Church where she was a faithful member of the Ruth Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Caring Hearts Bible study group.
Emily is survived by three sons, Mike (Beth) McCarty of Elko, SC, Pat (Susan) McCarty of Shelby, NC, and Bert (Gina) McCarty of Seneca, SC; grandchildren, Brett (Dana) McCarty of Durham, NC, Betsy (Kin) Hair of Springfield, SC, Sara Emily McCarty of Madison, WI, Max McCarty of Seneca, SC, Ryan (Dorothy) Stout of McArthur, Ohio and Will (Paige) McCarty of Crestview, FL, deployed at this time; great-grandchildren, Micah and Lila McCarty of Durham, NC, Dylan Crisp and Keigan Mathews of McArthur, Ohio. The family would like to especially thank Gene Berry for being a close friend to Emily and the family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tyrone McCarty; sisters, Helen Love and Maybelle Lambries and brother, Charles Matthews.
Services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Batesburg at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, with visitation at 3:00 pm prior to the service.
