Faye West Powell

Faye West Powell, 91, of Ridge Spring, SC, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2023. She was born on October 29, 1932 in Newberry, SC, and was a daughter of the late Julian A. and Leila Brooks West. She was the third of six children. Faye was a graduate of Hollywood High School and Winthrop College and taught elementary school for thirty years in Aiken, Edgefield, and Lexington County School Districts.


She was an active member of Ridge Spring Baptist Church where she taught a Sunday School class in the Children’s department and an Adult Women’s Sunday School class for many years. Faye was also a member of the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU).


Faye was also active in the community where she enjoyed being a member of the Woman’s Study Club of Ridge Spring, the Ridge Garden Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Alpha Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of women educators. She was an avid Gamecock fan and enjoyed attending many football and basketball games. Faye loved traveling and took many bus trips across the US with her friends during her retirement. Faye was an amazing southern cook and made the best macaroni pie for gatherings.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Lamar Powell; three sisters, Julette Leavell, Eleanor Reed, and Nell Gantt; and one brother, Jake William West.


She is survived by her four daughters: Jane Tomlinson (Russell) of Irmo, SC, Cathy Addison (Walter) of Eatonton, GA, Beth Powell of Aiken, SC, and Amy Windhorn of Irmo, SC; one sister, Mamie Longshore (Jimmy) of Newberry, SC; and her nine grandchildren, Jennifer T. Allen (Michael), Russ Tomlinson (Becca), Jake Tomlinson (Ashley), Walt Addison (Whitney), John Addison, Jack Addison, Jessica Young (Josh), Michael Windhorn, Matthew Windhorn; and her eleven great-grandchildren, Olivia, Bennett, and Wesley Allen; Everett, Sutton, Salters, and Chandler Tomlinson; Frances Jane Tomlinson, and Landen, Colten, and Payten Young. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.


The funeral service for Mrs. Powell will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, November 18th at Ridge Spring Baptist Church with burial to follow in Ridge Spring Cemetery. Rev. Wesley Mayfield will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 A.M to 11:00 A.M. in Ridge Spring Baptist Church Education Building. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons.


The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to The Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, PO Box 1178, Greenwood, SC 29648-1178 or Ridge Spring Baptist Church, PO Box 364, Ridge Spring, SC 29129. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Saluda Nursing Center and her friend, Theola "Susie" Herrin for their care and compassion provided to Mama and her family.
