James Benjamin Holton “Bennie”, 90, passed away Saturday, December 23rd, 2023. Bennie was born in Bacon County, Alma, GA to Mr. Benjamin Newton Holton and Mrs. Nancy Elizabeth Norton Holton on February 7th, 1933.
Bennie graduated from Bacon County High School in 1950. After 3 years in service, he and his precious wife, Mary, were married and enjoyed 63 years of marriage together prior to her passing in April of 2019. Three daughters were born from this union— Beth (Ron) Kirkland, Betty (Leon) Addy, and Bridget (Denver) Cromer; five grandchildren— Brittney (Ben) Herlong, Brandon Addy, Blair (Justin) Long, Brad (Lauren) Addy, and Jackson Kirkland and the best great granddaughters— Addie Beth and Britton Ann Herlong. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Hartley Holton; sisters— Aliff (Freeman) Jowers, Beaunia Holton, Eula Mae (Joe) Powers, Iva Lee (Vernon) Thomas, Louveda (Raymond) Penfield, Mary Lorena Holton, Teresa (Clifton) Cotten, Virgie Holton; brothers— Harvey (Wilma) Holton and Lamar Holton; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Bennie and Mary built their home in Batesburg, SC in 1959. He spent most of his working years with R.L. Bryan Company and retired in 1996. He enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, and working sudoku puzzles. He was known as “Granddaddy” to all who loved him. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Batesburg, SC where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Choir Member. He was also a member at Big Creek Baptist Church in Alma, GA prior to moving to South Carolina.
The funeral service for Bennie will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 27th, at First Baptist Church of Batesburg with burial following in Batesburg Cemetery. The Rev. Henry Stamper and Rev. Neal Smith will officiate. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. prior to the service at the church. Active Pallbearers will be: Ben Herlong, Brad Addy, Brandon Addy, Freddie Holton, Jackson Kirkland and Justin Long. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Addie Beth and Britton Ann Herlong.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Batesburg, 436 West Church Street, Batesburg-Leesville, SC 29006 or charity's of one's choice.
