Chappells

Obituary for James Marvin Maffett James Mott Marvin Maffett, 87, of Chappells was born in Saluda on May 9, 1936, to the late Thomas and Mae Turner Maffett. He was married to the love of his life, Uschi Doll, of Germany for more than 59 years. They were blessed with four children, Michael, Kathrene, Sandra, and Christina; five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Mott was drafted in January of 1959 serving two years in the US Army with an additional time spent in the inactive reserves before enlisting in July of 1963 where he served with honor and distinction for 22+ years. James served two tours in the Vietnam war.

After retiring to West Columbia, SC, he worked in construction for various companies and devoted his free time to his hobby of building and remodeling for businesses around the Columbia area. He also built his own workshop at home and did several projects for family and friends. After the death of his mother, Mott moved back to his homeplace where he enjoyed his retirement working the farm, including a garden and many animals. He is fondly remembered by many as the vegetable man. He was a quiet man of integrity and loyalty who loved his God, his family, and his country. He was known to be generous, giving you the shirt off his back and buying it back if you needed the money.
His sweet spirit proceeded to march peacefully to heaven on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

An enormous amount of gratitude goes out to Martin and Vickie Sweat, of Saluda, two earth angels who took much care and concern, overlooking many of the daily duties of his farm, while caring for him and his wife’s needs. Mott is survived by his wife, three children, his grandchildren, and great grandchildren, along with a sister, Christine "Tena" Whittle as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he has proceeded in death by a daughter, Christina Chrissy Maffett; siblings, Milton Maffett, Sergeant Marion Maffett (POW/MIA), Mildred Rushton, Elizabeth Cockrell, and Loren Karter.

A memorial service for Mr. Maffett will be held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 2nd at Fort Jackson National Cemetery with military honors.
