James Thayer (Jim) Johnson, Jr., age 69, of Knoxville, TN, passed away at Duke Medical Center Hospice, June 1, 2016. He was born and raised in Batesburg, S.C. He graduated from the University of South Carolina and was a lifelong avid Gamecock fan.
Jim served as division Manager for RJR/Nabisco in Orlando, Florida and Knoxville, Tennessee. After early retirement, he participated in various mission and benevolent activities. He was an active member of Central Baptist Church Bearden where he served as deacon and on various committees. He was a volunteer worker, advisory board member and chief fund raiser for Appalachian Outreach, a ministry of Carson Newman University. He and his wife, Phyllis, were active in Christian Hospitality Network, a missionary care organization.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Thayer and Jimmie Lee Johnson and survived by his wife of 47 years, Phyllis, and son James III (Shannon) of Baltimore, MD.
There will be a memorial service June 25, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, Batesburg, S.C. Family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, Jim requested that contributions be made to Appalachian Outreach, P.O. Box 71904, Jefferson City, Tennessee 37760
