Jesse Preston Derrick, 88, formerly of West Columbia, died Saturday, June 12th, 2021 at his home in Batesburg, SC.
Born in Irmo, SC, he was a son of the late Wilbur and Ernestine Weed Derrick. He was a graduate of Irmo High School and served in the Army National Guard. Mr. Derrick, fondly known as “J.P.,” went on to work for Southern Bell Telephone Company for 43 years until his retirement. It was there that he met his loving wife of 63 years, Jeanette Gantt Derrick. He was a man of strong faith and was a devoted member of Holland Avenue Baptist Church for over 60 years where he taught Sunday School, served as a deacon, trustee, and RA leader, co-founded the Prayer Ministry, and served on numerous other committees.
Along with his wife, Mr. Derrick is survived by his two children, Dale (Jeff) Williams, and Doug (Jane) Derrick; four grandchildren, Jessica Strickland, Crystal Edwards, Laura and Berkley Derrick; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Lavone (Frances) Derrick, Stanley (Susan) Derrick, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy; and sisters, Vivian Reedy and Hazel Hilborn.
Funeral services for Mr. Derrick will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 15th at Holland Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Wilson and Rev. Rufus Chaneyworth officiating. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary.
