Melvin Lake Black, 79, of Batesburg, SC, passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2017. He was the son of the late Grady Lee and Effie Leona Lake Black. Melvin was a graduate of Saluda High School, then after retirement from Monsanta in Greenwood, he worked for Team Amick Racing.
He voluntarily served in the National Guard and Midlands Fire Department. He also worked for Hartley Grocery and Park Davis in Greenwood, SC. He was a lifetime member of Sardis Baptist Church.
He was predeceased by his wife, Rita Morris Black; brothers, Valton and Wendell Wade Black; granddaughter, Rita Ann Black and grandson, David Lee Black.
Melvin is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Steven Black (Kim); sister, Cheryl Collins with fiancée, William Power of Lexington; grandchildren, Hunter Wade Black, Joy Faith Black and Christin Grace Black; nephews, Kevin Collins and Brad Black & niece, Christie Penland.
Memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, December 1 at Sardis Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Mike Bell and Rev. Dennis Campbell with visitation after the service.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Black Family Scholarship fund of First Citizens Bank in Saluda to be awarded to a Saluda County High School Senior in memory of David Lee, Wendell Wade and Melvin Black or donate Connie Maxwell Children’s Home of Greenwood.
