Mildred Shealy of Batesburg-Leesville passed away at her home on August 18, 2016 and was just a few days shy of her 89th birthday. She was the daughter of Otis and Lillie Puckett Maroney. In the mid 1940’s before graduating from Batesburg High School, she went to work for Southern Bell as a “Number, Please” switchboard operator in the telephone office which was located upstairs above what is now Worthy’s Florist on Oak Street in Batesburg. She would continue to work for the Bell Telephone system for more than 40 years.
Mildred met Norman Shealy a few years after he returned from WWII and they were married. They were members of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church where together and after his death she served as Treasurer for some 50 years. She greatly loved and was devoted to her family. They had two sons, Michael Norman (Betsy) Shealy and Phillip Allen (Carolyn) Shealy both of Batesburg-Leesville. Grandchildren include Brandee Quarles, Ashley Cobb, Charles (Charlie) Shealy of Batesburg-Leesville and MSgt. Chris (Misaki) Shealy, USAF, of Okinawa, Japan and great-grandchildren Payton and Ellee Quarles, Kaito, Cody, Aiden and Alyssa Shealy, and Abigail and Jackson Cobb. She was predeceased by her sister, Alafair Spradley and brothers, Cole, Gibson, Floyd, Jimmy, and Sam Maroney.
Funeral service will be conducted at St. Peters Lutheran Church, 7389 Fairview Rd., Batesburg-Leesville by Rev. G. Reginald Cruse on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 11:00 am. Burial will take place thereafter in the family plot in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Friday, August 19, 2016 at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, other times at her residence. Memorials may be made to the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, 7389 Fairview Rd., Batesburg-Leesville, SC 29006.
