Dr. Norman Richard Smith, Jr., departed this life on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at the age of 67. A long-time resident of Leesville, SC, Dr. Rick was born on November 29th, 1957, in Hyannis, Massachusetts. His life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his passion for his profession ,his dedication to organic farming and and his deep love for the great outdoors.
Professionally, Dr. Smith was esteemed for over 40 years in his chiropractic practice, 30 of which were in his hometown of Batesburg-Leesville. His love for his profession manifested itself in a calling that brought him joy and fulfillment. His commitment to holistic care and genuine empathy for his patients touched many lives in his community.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Rick possessed a remarkable zeal for the outdoors. Having been raised on a farm himself, he realized that life on the farm would provide a healthy environment for his children teaching them the importance of hard work, responsibility, and generational investment in the land. Whether hiking the expansive Appalachian Trail or paddling through the serene Boundary Waters near Canada, he sought adventures that connected him with nature. His passion for scouting led him to start Boy Scout troop 221 helped guide all five of his sons to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He also inspired countless others to pursue similar accomplishments.
A man of many talents, Dr. Rick had an innate ability to build or mend anything, skills he eagerly passed on to his children. His affinity for the land, and his “Jack of all trades” abilities were evident at the Smith Blueberry Farm, affectionately known to family and friends as "Smithtopia." For three decades, Dr. Rick nurtured the farm's growth, creating a paradise which remains a testament to his love for farming and community. This beautiful farm is a legacy that he leaves for his children and grandchildren. He prided himself that Smith Blueberry Farm was a retreat and refuge for those within the community who sought peace and tranquility through nature’s beauty.
Without a doubt, Dr. Rick's impact on his family, friends, and community will be profound and enduring. His warmth, wisdom, and adventurous spirit have left an indelible mark on the hearts of those privileged to know him. His family is left with the conviction to continue the relationships that Dr. Rick formed and the intention of his work.
Dr. Smith is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Sharon Smith. Together they raised six wonderful children: Matthew Smith (Kaylin), Chelsea Smith (Ethan Knapp), Tyler Smith, Josiah Smith (Tara), Jacob Smith, and Benjamin Smith (Linda Alanen). He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Violet Smith, Huxley Smith, Soren Smith, Grayson Knapp, and the eagerly anticipated baby girl Smith. Also surviving are his parents, Norman Richard Smith, Sr. and Laurel Shaughnessey Smith, and his siblings, Shawn Smith and Heather Jackson (David).
The memorial service for Dr. Smith will be held at 3 PM on Sunday, December 22nd at Celebrations Church with Rev. Jameson Bowman officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 1 PM.
