Robert Gantt

Robert Kelly Gantt 91, of Leesville, husband of Jeanette Gunter Gantt passed away Sunday morning February 22, 2015 at his home near Fairview South Carolina. He had recently suffered declining health spending time in the hospital and in rehab at Lexington Extended Care. His only wish while in rehab was to go home and he was able to do that just 5 days before his death. He was born November 6, 1923 in Lexington County to Ulysses Kelly and Florence Burkett Gantt. He attended school at Fairview School and graduated in 1940. He worked for General Electric Company, later Mepco as a Maintenance Set up man until his retirement some thirty years ago. He was very active in his church, Pine Grove Baptist and was well respected and loved by not only his family, but by all who came to know him. He played guitar and the fiddle as a young man and was a lover of bluegrass music. Until his death, his memory was unimpaired. He was a wonderful storyteller and could give unbelievable details of events even from his childhood. He was also gifted at carpentry, a skill inherited from his father. Robert and his wife, Jeanette, shared 52 wonderful and loving years together. It was truly a 'marriage made in heaven.' He and Jeanette share eight children: Louise Gantt Lingle (Arnold), Lu Gantt Bickley (Von), Willette Gunter Hagenmeyer (Karl), Kathy Gantt Widener ( Jimmy), Steve Gantt (Ann), Linda Gunter Smith (Steven) and Steven Wade Gunter. He is also survived by 15grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Robert was predeceased in death by one son, Donnie C. Gunter, one sister, Elsie Gantt Ridgell and one brother Leon O. Gantt. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, February 25, at Pine Grove Baptist Church, near Fairview, SC, with interment in the church cemetery with Rev. Bud Moss officiating. Visitation will be held at 6-8:00 pm Tuesday, February 24, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, other times at his residence. Memorials may be made to Pine Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 236 Pine Grove Road, Leesville, SC 29070.
