Sandra Williams Mize

Sandra Williams Mize passed away on September 10, 2023, at the age of 80. Born in Athens, Georgia to the late Spurgeon (Spud) and Alma Inez Williams. She was the epitome of a grey-haired, southern grandma. Familiar to many as a gracious and kind woman, her generosity and love knew no bounds. Whether it was cooking a batch of her famous biscuits or cornbread or mixing a pitcher of iced tea and lemon, she always had time and something for everyone.

The matriarch of her family and affectionately known to most as Nana, Sandra is survived by her daughter, Melanie Mize Hipp; grandchildren, Brandon Matthew (Jennifer) and Daniel Adam (Whitney) Shaw; beloved great-grandchildren, Bowen Robert, Conway Benjamin, Patrick Boone, and Hadley Dene Shaw; as well as a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Sandra was proceeded in death by her husband of 53 years, Robert Laten “Billy” Mize; brother, Garry Ray Williams; sons-in-law, Mark Allen Hipp and Bruce Dale Shaw.

Although she stood a whopping 4ft nothing from the ground, her presence was as big as the difference in her and her beloved Billy’s height. After moving to the Batesburg-Leesville area in 1965, Sandra and Billy fully involved themselves in their new community. You could find Sandra working at their family owned insurance agency, writing the church bulletin for Beulah Baptist Church as the Church Secretary, or serving on the South Carolina Poultry Festival Parade Committee.

The family will receive visitors from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at Milton Shealy Funeral Home. A private service will be held at a later date.
