Burial will follow in the Batesburg Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. Wednesday before the service at the funeral home, other times at the home of his daughter, Jean Senterfeit. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Brotherhood Fund, 113 Bethel Road, Monetta, SC 29105 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Eargle died Monday, May 1, 2017. Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late Wesley E. Eargle, Sr. and Maggie Oswald Eargle. In his earlier years, he worked at Fallaw’s Poultry in Leesville and Williamson’s Seed Co. in Columbia as a truck driver. He was a poultry grower and farmer for almost 50 years. During the years that he farmed, he would work day and part of the night to plant, harvest crops, and take that harvest to mills miles away. He continued helping his sons farm as long as his health allowed.

Mr. Eargle instilled in his children an incredible work ethic that has served each of them their entire life. Many life lessons were learned while growing up on a farm. Watching the birth of a newborn calf as well as the death of a beloved pet taught each of them the circle of life. Faith and hope were learned by watching their daddy plant crop after crop with some years producing an abundant crop and some years as a failure. God has always watched over the family and provided for their needs.

Petty Officer 1st Class Eargle was a veteran of World War II where he served as a Machinist Mate in the Navy with a tour in Guam. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, trustee, member of the King’s Men Sunday School Class, Brotherhood, and the choir.

Surviving are his second wife, Lynn Mehaffey Eargle; sons, Watson (Verta) Eargle and Wyatt (Sherry) Eargle of Batesburg; a daughter, Jean (Richard) Senterfeit of Batesburg; a stepson, Ernie (Beth) Mehaffey of Columbia; a stepdaughter, Joy (Kevin) Harley of Lexington; four granddaughters, Tiffany Coleman, Leslie (Trey) Smith, Dr. Megan (Wesley) Miller and Sarah Eargle; five step grandsons, Aaron (Laura) Barret, Connor (Alexis) Mehaffey, David (Katie) and John Harley; great- grandchildren, Emily Coleman, Walker Smith; and step great-grandchild, Penny Mehaffey; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded by his first wife, Velma Watson Eargle and a brother, Vivian Eargle. Rest now. The day’s work is done. Your job on earth is finished and the last of your crop has been harvested.

The family would like to thank his caregivers Joanne Harrison, Gail Morris, Tri-County Hospice, and the neighbors and friends who have been there for Mr. Eargle.
